Pityriasis lichenoides is a pediatric papulosquamous disorder. Pityriasis lichenoides chronica has a longer duration and higher persistence rate than pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta, with limited treatment responses.

Background:

  • Pityriasis lichenoides is an uncommon papulosquamous disorder with an unknown cause.
  • This study reviews clinical features and treatment outcomes of pityriasis lichenoides patients at a tertiary center.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the clinical presentation and treatment efficacy in pityriasis lichenoides patients.
  • To compare the disease course and long-term outcomes of different pityriasis lichenoides subtypes.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 75 patients diagnosed with pityriasis lichenoides from 1997 to 2013.
  • Long-term follow-up data obtained via telephone interviews for 46 patients.

Main Results:

  • Pityriasis lichenoides chronica (50%) and pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta (29%) were the main subtypes.
  • Pityriasis lichenoides chronica showed significantly longer duration (78 months) and higher active disease rates (82%) at follow-up compared to pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta.
  • Phototherapy (47% response) was the most effective treatment, while pityriasis lichenoides chronica often persisted with pigmentary changes.

Conclusions:

  • Pityriasis lichenoides is primarily a pediatric condition.
  • Pityriasis lichenoides chronica has a protracted course and may lead to persistent pigmentary alterations.
  • Treatment efficacy for pityriasis lichenoides is often limited, especially for the chronic subtype.
