Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify specific kinetic variables from isometric midthigh pull (IMTP) and countermovement jump (CMJ) that correlate with serve velocity.

  • Twenty-one elite junior tennis players participated.
  • Correlations were calculated between peak serve speed and IMTP kinetic variables, CMJ height, shoulder rotation strength, and anthropometric measures.
  • Pearson's product-moment correlation coefficient was used.

  • Significant positive correlations were observed between peak serve speed and body height (r = 0.80), IMTP peak force (r = 0.87), CMJ height (r = 0.77), and impulse at 300 ms (r = 0.71).
  • Strong correlations were also found with impulse at 100 ms (r = 0.58), 200 ms (r = 0.64), and shoulder internal/external rotation strength (r = 0.63).
  • IMTP peak force demonstrated the strongest correlation with serve speed.

Conclusions:

  • Isometric midthigh pull (IMTP) variables and countermovement jump (CMJ) height are significantly related to tennis serve speed in elite junior players.
  • Strength and conditioning coaches can utilize IMTP testing on force plates for athletic profiling.
  • IMTP assessment can inform training strategies to enhance power, strength, and potentially reduce injury risk in tennis athletes.
