Abstract:
The gentamicin minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolates were determined. Seventy-three percent of isolates demonstrated an MIC range of 8 to 16 microg/mL, and 27% demonstrated an MIC of 4 microg/mL or less. Significant associations between gentamicin MIC and resistance or reduced susceptibility to other antimicrobials were found.
Insights
Gentamicin minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) for Neisseria gonorrhoeae were assessed. Most isolates showed elevated MICs, suggesting potential treatment challenges and links to other antimicrobial resistance patterns.
Area of Science:
- Microbiology
- Infectious Diseases
- Antimicrobial Resistance
Background:
- Neisseria gonorrhoeae is a significant cause of sexually transmitted infections.
- Antimicrobial resistance in N. gonorrhoeae poses a growing public health threat.
- Gentamicin is an antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the gentamicin minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) for Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolates.
- To investigate potential associations between gentamicin susceptibility and resistance to other antimicrobials.
Main Methods:
- Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of gentamicin were determined for N. gonorrhoeae isolates.
- Susceptibility testing was performed using standard microbiological methods.
Main Results:
- 73% of N. gonorrhoeae isolates exhibited gentamicin MICs in the range of 8 to 16 microg/mL.
- 27% of isolates demonstrated gentamicin MICs of 4 microg/mL or less.
- Significant associations were observed between gentamicin MICs and resistance/reduced susceptibility to other antimicrobials.
Conclusions:
- A substantial proportion of N. gonorrhoeae isolates display reduced susceptibility to gentamicin.
- Elevated gentamicin MICs in N. gonorrhoeae may correlate with broader antimicrobial resistance.
- These findings highlight the need for ongoing surveillance of gentamicin susceptibility in N. gonorrhoeae.
