Life events in depression. Relationship to subtypes.

A Roy, A Breier, A R Doran

    Journal of Affective Disorders
    |September 1, 1985
    PubMed
    Summary

Depression is linked to more life events, especially undesirable ones. Major depressive episodes without melancholia show a stronger association with recent life events compared to those with melancholia.

    Area of Science:

    • Psychiatry
    • Psychology
    • Epidemiology

    Background:

    • Life events are recognized as potential triggers for depressive episodes.
    • Understanding the relationship between life stressors and different subtypes of depression is crucial for targeted interventions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the association between life events and major depressive episodes (MDE).
    • To compare the frequency of life events in patients with MDE with and without melancholia against normal controls.

    Main Methods:

    • A case-control study involving 40 patients diagnosed with depression and 41 healthy controls.
    • Life events occurring in the six months preceding the onset of depression were recorded and analyzed.
    • Patients were categorized into MDE with melancholia and MDE without melancholia groups.

    Main Results:

    • Depressed patients reported significantly more life events, particularly undesirable ones, than controls.
    • Patients with MDE without melancholia experienced more life events than those with MDE with melancholia.
    • MDE without melancholia patients showed a significantly higher incidence of life events compared to matched controls.

    Conclusions:

    • Recent life events are significantly associated with the onset of depression.
    • The subtype of major depressive episode influences the relationship with preceding life events, with non-melancholic MDE showing a stronger link.
