Planning Nursing Care II01:29

Planning Nursing Care II

4.0K
A nursing care plan can present in two forms: informal and formal. Informal is a care plan for the individual use of the nurse and goals they wish to accomplish during their shift. Informal care plans are not included in the patient chart. A formal nursing care plan is a written or computerized guide that organizes patient care. It is further subdivided into two: standardized and individualized care plans. Standardized care plans are pre-populated care plans for specific patient populations,...

Planning Nursing Care I

6.1K
The planning phase of the nursing process helps nurses set priorities, outline patient-centered goals and expected outcomes, and tailor nursing interventions to align with the aligned care plan. Through the planning phase, the nurse applies critical thinking skills to align and develop interventions according to the patient's needs. It provides continuity of care allowing patients to receive the maximum benefit from treatment. It serves as a pilot plan for allocating individual staff to a...

Types of Records I: Unit and Nurses Records

1.7K
Unit records in healthcare settings document the patient's treatment history, including interventions, medications, diagnostic and laboratory results, progress notes, personal care needs, vital signs, and other medical information. They are crucial for managing patient care, aiding healthcare professionals in providing quality treatment and informed decision-making.
Unit records can be divided into two main types: administrative records and clinical records.

Measurement: Derived Units

56.1K
The International System of Units or SI system, by international agreement, has fixed measurement units for seven fundamental properties: length, mass, time, temperature, electric current, amount of substance, and luminosity. These are called the SI base units.

Measurement: Standard Units

Every measurement provides three kinds of information: the size or magnitude of the measurement (a number), a standard of comparison for the measurement (a unit), and an indication of the uncertainty of the measurement. While the number and unit are explicitly represented when a quantity is written, the uncertainty is an aspect of the errors in the measurement results.

Summary

Nurses in intensive care units (ICUs) experience significant stress, anxiety, and depression, particularly after 24-hour shifts. This workload impacts their attention and psychomotor skills, highlighting a critical need for support.

Area of Science:

  • Critical Care Nursing
  • Occupational Health Psychology

Background:

  • Intensive care units (ICUs) present unique stressors for nursing staff.
  • Long working hours, such as 24-hour shifts, may exacerbate psychological distress and cognitive load.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To quantify stress, anxiety, and depression levels in ICU nurses.
  • To investigate the relationship between these psychological states and attention levels before and after extended work periods.

Main Methods:

  • An observational, quantitative, and analytical study design was employed.
  • Eighteen ICU nurses completed inventories for stress, anxiety, and depression.
  • Attention levels and psychomotor functioning were assessed.

Main Results:

  • High prevalence of psychological distress: 61% reported stress, 33% depression, and 99.9% anxiety.
  • Strong correlations were found between stress and depression (ρ = 0.564, p <0.05) and stress and anxiety (ρ = 1, p <0.05).
  • A weak correlation was noted between stress and task execution time (TMT A, M2: ρ = 0.055), but not at baseline (M0: ρ = -0.249).

Conclusions:

  • Extended 24-hour shifts in ICUs are associated with elevated stress, anxiety, and depression among nurses.
  • These psychological burdens correlate with diminished attention processes and psychomotor performance.
  • Findings underscore the detrimental effects of ICU workload on nursing staff well-being and cognitive function.
