Background:

  • In-office bleaching using hydrogen peroxide (HP) effectively whitens teeth but can alter dental tissue morphology and properties.
  • A need exists for protocols that enhance the safety of HP bleaching treatments.

Observation:

  • Two patients underwent three in-office bleaching sessions using 35% HP (with or without calcium).
  • Patients brushed twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste containing bioactive glass (BG) before and during treatment.
  • Dental bleaching effectiveness was assessed using the Vita scale, and patient sensitivity was monitored.

Findings:

  • The BG-containing toothpaste protocol did not compromise the whitening effectiveness of the hydrogen peroxide bleaching agents.
  • No tooth sensitivity was reported by either patient during or after the bleaching sessions.
  • The use of BG toothpaste was associated with maintaining enamel properties during the whitening procedure.

Implications:

  • Bioactive glass toothpaste represents a promising adjunct to in-office bleaching, enhancing safety and preserving dental tissue integrity.
  • This protocol offers a safer approach to dental bleaching, potentially reducing adverse effects like sensitivity.
  • Further research into BG-based dentifrices could optimize preventive strategies in cosmetic dentistry.
