Background:

  • Developmental language disorder (DLD) has been tentatively linked to atypical cerebral lateralization.
  • Previous research suggests associations between DLD and altered functional brain lateralization for language, though evidence for handedness links is weaker.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To replicate findings on the association between DLD and reduced laterality.
  • To investigate hand preference and language laterality using functional transcranial Doppler ultrasound (fTCD) in children with and without DLD.

Main Methods:

  • A sample of 107 children with DLD and 156 typically developing (TD) children (aged 6–11 years) were assessed.
  • Handedness and language laterality (using fTCD during an animation description task) were measured.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences in handedness or language lateralization were found between DLD and TD groups.
  • Contrary to predictions, the TD group showed a higher incidence of right lateralization for language than the DLD group.
  • No associations were replicated between language laterality and language test scores.

Conclusions:

  • The study suggests that previous reports of atypical manual or language lateralization in DLD may be false positives.
  • Atypical lateralization is not necessarily inconsistent with typical language development.
