Background:

  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings in tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) lack specificity.
  • Pathophysiological mechanisms underlying TBE-related MRI changes are not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate brain perfusion in TBE patients using dynamic susceptibility-weighted contrast-enhanced MRI perfusion (DSC-MRI perfusion).

Main Methods:

  • 12 TBE patients in the acute phase underwent conventional MRI and DSC-MRI perfusion.
  • Cerebral blood flow (CBF), cerebral blood volume (CBV), mean transit time (MTT), and time to peak (TTP) were analyzed.
  • Perfusion parameters were compared between TBE patients and a control group.

Main Results:

  • TBE patients showed increased CBF and CBV with prolonged TTP in subcortical areas.
  • Significant increases in thalamic CBF and CBV were observed.
  • Thalamic TTP was prolonged, with a slight reduction in MTT.

Conclusions:

  • DSC-MRI perfusion identified brain perfusion disturbances in TBE patients, predominantly in the thalami.
  • DSC-MRI perfusion may be a valuable tool for assessing TBE-affected brain regions.
