The Nitrogen Cycle01:49

The Nitrogen Cycle

60.8K
Nitrogen atoms, present in all proteins and DNA, are recycled between abiotic and biotic components of the ecosystem. However, the primary form of nitrogen on Earth is nitrogen gas, which cannot be used by most animals and plants. Thus, nitrogen gas must first be converted into a usable form by nitrogen-fixing bacteria before it can be cycled through other living organisms. The use of nitrogen-containing fertilizers and animal waste products in human agriculture has greatly influenced the...

Proteins: From Genes to Degradation

14.6K
Within a biological system, the DNA encodes the RNA, and the nucleotide sequence in the RNA further defines the amino acid sequence in the protein. This is referred to as “The Central Dogma of Molecular Biology” - a term coined by Francis Crick.  Central dogma is a firm principle in biology that defines the flow of genetic information within any life form. The two fundamental steps in central dogma are - transcription and translation.
Transcription is the synthesis of RNA...

Nonsense-mediated mRNA Decay02:27

Nonsense-mediated mRNA Decay

11.9K
The Upf proteins that carry out nonsense-mediated decay (NMD) are found in all eukaryotic organisms, including humans. Each protein has an individual role, but they need to work in collaboration. Upf1 is an ATP-dependent RNA helicase that unwinds the RNA helix. Because Upf1 can unwind any RNA, Upf2 and Upf3 are required to help Upf1 discriminate between nonsense and normal mRNAs.
Usually, Upf3 binds to an Exon Junction Complex (EJC) at mRNA splice sites. If a ribosome fully translates the mRNA,...

Milgram's Obedience to Authority02:20

Milgram's Obedience to Authority

7.4K
Obedience to authority is classically demonstrated in a more famous series of social psychology experiments performed by Stanley Milgram. He was a social psychology professor at Yale who was influenced by the trial of Adolf Eichmann, a Nazi war criminal. Eichmann’s defense for the atrocities he committed was that he was “just following orders.”

tRNA Activation02:26

tRNA Activation

23.2K
Aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases are present in both eukaryotes and bacteria. Though eukaryotes have 20 different aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases to couple to 20 amino acids, many bacteria do not have genes for all of these aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases. Despite this, they still use all 20 amino acids to synthesize their proteins. For instance, some bacteria do not have the gene encoding the enzyme that couples glutamine with its partner tRNA. In these organisms, one enzyme adds glutamic acid to all of the...

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

Limited control influences present-oriented behavior in economic disparities. However, mortality risk is unlikely the main driver of this impatience, challenging previous theories on deprivation.

Area of Science:

  • Behavioral economics
  • Socioeconomic disparities
  • Psychology of poverty

Background:

  • The behavioral constellation of deprivation describes present-oriented behaviors observed in lower socioeconomic groups.
  • Previous research suggests limited control may explain behavioral differences between the poor and rich.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the common causes of the behavioral constellation of deprivation.
  • To evaluate the role of limited control and mortality risk in explaining present-oriented behavior.

Main Methods:

  • The study critically reviews existing literature and theoretical frameworks.
  • It analyzes the proposed link between limited control, mortality risk, and behavioral outcomes.

Main Results:

  • Limited control partially explains present-oriented behavior differences between socioeconomic groups.
  • Mortality risk is identified as a less significant factor in driving this impatience.

Conclusions:

  • While limited control is a contributing factor, it does not fully account for the observed behaviors.
  • Alternative or additional mechanisms beyond mortality risk are likely involved in the behavioral constellation of deprivation.
