Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice of Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) among healthcare professionals in tertiary health centers in Nepal.

  • A cross-sectional study was conducted in three teaching hospitals in Nepal from January to April 2016.
  • Doctors and nurses in Paediatrics/Neonatal and Obstetrics/Gynaecology wards were surveyed using a pretested questionnaire.
  • Responses were compared between doctors and nurses.

  • The survey achieved a 65% response rate, with all doctors and 95.3% of nurses demonstrating knowledge of KMC.
  • A significant portion of health workers (37.7% of doctors, 48.8% of nurses) incorrectly believed KMC is solely for low birth weight neonates (<2500g).
  • While 75% of doctors and 50% of nurses reported regular KMC practice in their wards, 22.2% cited lack of skill and knowledge as barriers to consistent application.

Conclusions:

  • The majority of doctors and nurses in Nepal exhibit good general knowledge and positive attitudes towards Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC).
  • Despite good awareness, the actual practice of KMC is inconsistent among healthcare workers, highlighting a need for improved implementation strategies.
