Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare observer preference for chest radiography image quality using a point spread function (PSF) deconvolution algorithm (TRUVIEW ART) versus original images.
  • To assess the impact of the TRUVIEW ART algorithm on the visualization of specific anatomical regions in chest radiographs.

Main Methods:

  • Fifty pairs of posteroanterior chest radiographs were prospectively collected.
  • Images were processed with and without the TRUVIEW ART algorithm, which corrects scintillator-generated scattered signals.
  • Four chest radiologists evaluated 10 anatomical regions and overall image quality using a 5-point preference scale; statistical analysis employed the Wilcoxon's signed rank test.

Main Results:

  • All four radiologists consistently preferred images processed with the TRUVIEW ART algorithm for all 10 evaluated anatomical regions (mean preference score 3.6) and for overall image quality (mean score 3.8).
  • Statistical analysis showed a significant preference for the algorithm-enhanced images (p < 0.001).
  • The most improved anatomical regions included the azygoesophageal recess, thoracic spine, and unobscured lung.

Conclusions:

  • The deconvolution algorithm of PSF (TRUVIEW ART) significantly enhances the visibility of chest anatomical structures compared to original chest radiography.
  • This improvement in image quality is preferred by radiologists, potentially leading to more accurate diagnoses.
