Transcription Elongation Factors02:35

Transcription Elongation Factors

14.1K
Transcription elongation is a dynamic process that alters depending upon the sequence heterogeneity of the DNA being transcribed. Hence, it is not surprising that the elongation complex's composition also varies along the way while transcribing a gene.
The transcription elongation is regulated via pausing of RNA polymerase on several occasions during transcription. In bacteria, these halts are necessary because the transcription of DNA into mRNA is coupled to the translation of that mRNA...

Regulation of Stroke Volume01:27

Regulation of Stroke Volume

5.3K
The regulation of stroke volume, which is the amount of blood the heart pumps out during each heartbeat, is critical for maintaining a healthy circulatory system. Stroke volume is influenced by three main factors: preload, contractility, and afterload.
Preload refers to the degree of stretch on the heart before it contracts. It's analogous to the stretching of a rubber band; the more it's stretched, the more forcefully it snaps back. This concept is encapsulated in the Frank-Starling law of the...

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder

599
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric condition that arises following exposure to traumatic events such as natural disasters, forced displacement, or severe accidents. It significantly impairs individuals' ability to cope with daily activities and disrupts their emotional and psychological equilibrium.
Symptoms and Behavioral Manifestations
A spectrum of distressing symptoms characterizes PTSD. Recurrent flashbacks, where individuals involuntarily relive traumatic events,...

Cardiac Output and Stroke Volume

5.0K
Cardiac output (CO) is an integral aspect of human physiology, reflecting the heart's efficiency and responsiveness to the body's needs. It represents the volume of blood that the left or right ventricle ejects into the aorta or pulmonary trunk each minute. The CO is calculated by multiplying the heart rate (HR)—the number of heartbeats per minute—by the stroke volume (SV)—the amount of blood pumped out with each heartbeat.
In an average resting adult male, the typical cardiac...

Post-translational Translocation of Proteins to the RER01:27

Post-translational Translocation of Proteins to the RER

7.8K
A sizable fraction of proteins destined for ER are first synthesized in the cell cytosol and then transported across the ER membrane–a process called post-translational translocation. Similar to cotranslationally translocated proteins, these proteins also use the Sec translocon complex to enter the ER lumen.
Targeting proteins to the ER
Hsp40 and Hsp70 chaperone molecules bind the translated proteins in the cytosol to prevent their folding. The chaperone binding helps to keep the signal...

Area of Science:

  • Integrative Medicine
  • Neurology
  • Gastroenterology

Background:

  • Post-stroke indigestion is a common complication affecting patient recovery and quality of life.
  • Conventional treatments may have limitations or side effects.
  • Acupuncture is explored as an alternative therapeutic approach.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the clinical efficacy of elongated needle acupuncture, filiform needle acupuncture, and medication for post-stroke indigestion.

Main Methods:

  • Sixty patients with post-stroke indigestion were randomized into three groups: elongated needle acupuncture, filiform needle acupuncture, and medication (Domperidone).
  • Treatments were administered over 4 weeks.
  • Efficacy was assessed using symptom scores (TCM, LDQ, SDS) and quality of life measures (NDLQI).

Main Results:

  • All groups showed improvement in dyspepsia symptoms and quality of life after treatment.
  • The elongated needle group demonstrated significantly greater reductions in TCM symptom and LDQ scores compared to filiform needle and medication groups after 28 days.
  • The elongated needle group achieved a higher total effective rate (90%) compared to the filiform needle group (70%) and medication group (75%).

Conclusions:

  • Acupuncture utilizing elongated needles offers superior clinical efficacy in improving symptoms of post-stroke indigestion.
  • Elongated needle acupuncture is a more effective treatment option than filiform needle acupuncture or conventional medication for this condition.
