Knee Joint01:23

Knee Joint

3.4K
The knee joint is the most complicated joint in the body. It consists of three articulations– two tibiofemoral and one patellofemoral. As is characteristic of synovial joints, the knee joint has a thin articular capsule that partially surrounds this joint cavity. Additionally, several ligaments, muscles, and cartilaginous structures support the movement of the knee.
A total of seven ligaments support the knee joint. The patellar ligament, which is also attached to the quadriceps femoris...

    Summary

Arthroscopic knee surgery offers limited benefits for osteoarthritis. However, this review highlights specific knee conditions where arthroscopy remains a valuable treatment option, even with coexisting osteoarthritis.

    Area of Science:

    • Orthopedic Surgery
    • Knee Pathophysiology

    Background:

    • Arthroscopic knee surgery is a common orthopedic procedure.
    • Recent studies question its efficacy for osteoarthritis (OA) and degenerative knee pathology.
    • Focus on OA often overlooks other knee conditions treatable with arthroscopy.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To review evidence-based indications for arthroscopic intervention in knees with osteoarthritis.
    • To clarify the role of arthroscopy in managing specific knee pathologies beyond general degeneration.

    Main Methods:

    • Evidence-based review of recent randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews.
    • Analysis of arthroscopic surgery's role in various knee pathologies.
    • Focus on patient populations with concomitant osteoarthritis.

    Main Results:

    • Arthroscopic surgery and partial meniscectomy show limited benefit for osteoarthritis.
    • Arthroscopy is indicated for specific knee pathologies in patients with OA.
    • The review identifies conditions where arthroscopic intervention is warranted.

    Conclusions:

    • Arthroscopic knee surgery is not universally beneficial for osteoarthritis.
    • Specific indications exist for arthroscopic intervention in patients with OA.
    • This review provides guidance on appropriate arthroscopic treatment for knee pathologies in OA patients.
