Schemas

12.4K
A schema is a mental construct consisting of a cluster or collection of related concepts (Bartlett, 1932). There are many different types of schemata, and they all have one thing in common: schemata are a method of organizing information that allows the brain to work more efficiently. When a schema is activated, the brain makes immediate assumptions about the person or object being observed.

Chromatin Position Affects Gene Expression

25.0K
Chromatin is the massive complex of DNA and proteins packaged inside the nucleus. The complexity of chromatin folding and how it is packaged inside the nucleus greatly influences  access to genetic information. Generally, the nucleus' periphery is considered transcriptionally repressive, while the cell's interior is considered a transcriptionally active area.

Area of Science:

  • Oral pathology
  • Oncology
  • Dental surgery

Background:

  • Ameloblastic carcinoma (AC) is a rare and complex malignant odontogenic tumor.
  • Limited literature hinders understanding of its clinical characteristics and prognosis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate clinico-demographic factors of AC.
  • To determine the relationship between these factors, prognosis, and survival.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic literature review of AC cases (2000-2016).
  • Data analysis using Cox regression and Kaplan-Meier survival analysis.
  • Inclusion/exclusion criteria applied to 153 retrieved cases.

Main Results:

  • Patient age, treatment modality, and metastasis significantly impact overall survival.
  • The classification of AC as primary or secondary does not affect prognosis.

Conclusions:

  • Overall survival in ameloblastic carcinoma is determined by age, tumor site, treatment, and metastasis.
  • Early surgical management is the most favorable treatment for a better prognosis.
