Social Relationships and Well-Being01:30

Social Relationships and Well-Being

168
The significance of social relationships in psychological well-being is a well-established area of inquiry within social psychology. Research consistently demonstrates that the presence of meaningful, supportive relationships enhances emotional health, while the absence or deterioration of such connections can contribute to psychological distress. Relationships serve as a foundation for emotional support, identity, and social belonging, all of which are critical to an individual’s overall...

Factors Affecting Illness01:18

Factors Affecting Illness

4.9K
When a person's physical, emotional, intellectual, social development or spiritual functioning is compromised, this deviation from a healthy normal state is called illness. Illness creates stress that in turn harms individuals. Irritation, anger, denial, hopelessness, and fear are behavioral and emotional changes an individual experiences in the phases of illness. A variety of factors influence a person's health and well-being.
For instance, risk factors are connected to illness,...

Relationship Formation

45.1K
What do you think is the single most influential factor in determining with whom you become friends and whom you form romantic relationships? You might be surprised to learn that the answer is simple: the people with whom you have the most contact. This most important factor is proximity. You are more likely to be friends with people you have regular contact with. For example, there are decades of research that shows that you are more likely to become friends with people who live in your dorm,...

Dimensions of Health and Illness01:21

Dimensions of Health and Illness

9.5K
The factors influencing the health-illness continuum can be internal or external and may or may not be under conscious control. They are related to the following eight human dimensions, and each dimension is interrelated to one other.

Longitudinal Research02:20

Longitudinal Research

12.9K
Sometimes we want to see how people change over time, as in studies of human development and lifespan. When we test the same group of individuals repeatedly over an extended period of time, we are conducting longitudinal research. Longitudinal research is a research design in which data-gathering is administered repeatedly over an extended period of time. For example, we may survey a group of individuals about their dietary habits at age 20, retest them a decade later at age 30, and then again...

Analysis of Population Pharmacokinetic Data01:12

Analysis of Population Pharmacokinetic Data

587
Analysis of population pharmacokinetic data involves studying the behavior of drugs within diverse populations to understand their pharmacokinetic parameters. Traditional pharmacokinetic methods typically involve collecting samples from a few individuals and estimating these parameters. While these methods are commonly used, they have limitations in capturing the variability in drug response among individuals or heterogeneous populations. Population pharmacokinetics is employed to address these...

Summary

Having multiple physical diseases increases the risk of loneliness, particularly in younger adults. Stressful life events, anxiety, and depression mediate this association.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Gerontology
  • Psychiatry

Background:

  • Multimorbidity is associated with adverse health outcomes.
  • The link between physical multimorbidity and loneliness is under-researched.
  • Understanding this association is crucial for public health interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between physical multimorbidity and loneliness in the general population.
  • To identify potential mediators of the loneliness-physical multimorbidity relationship.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized data from the Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey 2007 (N=7403, aged ≥16).
  • Assessed 20 doctor-diagnosed physical conditions and loneliness using the Social Functioning Questionnaire.
  • Employed multivariable logistic regression analysis.

Main Results:

  • An increasing number of physical diseases correlated with higher odds of loneliness.
  • Odds ratios for loneliness increased significantly with the number of physical diseases (OR 1.34 to 2.82).
  • The association was strongest in the 16-44 age group and mediated by stressful life events, anxiety, and depression.

Conclusions:

  • Physical multimorbidity is significantly associated with increased odds of loneliness.
  • Stressful life events, anxiety, and depression play a mediating role.
  • Further prospective research is needed to explore underlying factors.
