Brief Augmented Psychodynamic Interpersonal Therapy (BAPIT) improved emotion processing in functional neurological symptoms (FNS). This therapy also enhanced quality of life and illness understanding, with changes correlating to validated measures.
Area of Science:
- Psychiatry
- Psychotherapy
- Neuroscience
Background:
- Functional neurological symptoms (FNS) are disabling, non-volitional conditions not explained by neurological disease.
- Brief Augmented Psychodynamic Interpersonal Therapy (BAPIT) targets emotion processing deficits central to FNS.
- Previous studies show BAPIT improves distress and functioning in FNS, but its impact on emotion processing is unclear.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess if the Emotional Processing Scale-25 (EPS-25) detects BAPIT-induced changes in FNS patients.
- To determine if EPS-25 changes correlate with established outcome measures in FNS.
Main Methods:
- 44 FNS patients completed pre- and post-therapy questionnaires.
- Measures included the EPS-25, SF-36, PHQ-15, CORE-10, and BIPQ.
- Therapy used was Brief Augmented Psychodynamic Interpersonal Therapy (BAPIT).
Main Results:
- Emotion processing improved significantly post-BAPIT (p = .049).
- Health-related quality of life (p = .02) and illness understanding (p = .01) also improved.
- EPS-25 improvements correlated with better mental health quality of life and reduced psychological distress.
Conclusions:
- BAPIT effectively improved emotion processing and clinical symptoms in FNS patients.
- The EPS-25 is a suitable tool for measuring psychotherapy-associated changes in FNS.
- Findings support BAPIT's role in addressing emotion processing deficits in FNS.
