High viscosity silicone oils show similar safety and injectability to standard oils for retinal surgery. These experimental oils are feasible for use with current vitrectomy systems, offering potential advantages for patients.
Area of Science:
- Ophthalmology
- Biomaterials Science
- Retinal Surgery
Background:
- Polydimethyl silicones (silicone oils) are crucial for long-term tamponade in complex retinal surgeries.
- Current silicone oils face challenges like emulsification and recurrent retinal detachment.
- High viscosity silicone oils are being investigated as potential alternatives.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the toxicity and safety of high viscosity silicone oils.
- To assess the feasibility of using these oils with current vitrectomy systems.
Main Methods:
- An experimental study involving 8 New Zealand White rabbit eyes.
- Vitreous cavities were filled with silicone oils of varying viscosities (5500, 12,500, and 30,000 cS) for 3 months.
- Histopathological examination and injectability assessments using a commercial vitrectomy system were performed.
Main Results:
- Histopathology revealed comparable retinal safety across all tested silicone oil viscosities, with no significant toxic effects observed.
- All tested high viscosity silicone oils (12,500 and 30,000 cS) were readily injectable using the Alcon VFC Pac system.
- Injectability duration was evaluated for different viscosities.
Conclusions:
- High viscosity experimental silicone oils demonstrate similar safety profiles to lower viscosity oils currently in use.
- The injectability of these high viscosity oils is feasible with existing vitrectomy equipment.
- These novel high viscosity silicone oils may present advantages for specific patient populations requiring long-term retinal tamponade.

Surface Tension, Capillary Action, and Viscosity
The various IMFs between identical molecules of a substance are examples of cohesive forces. The molecules within a liquid are surrounded by other molecules and are attracted equally in all directions by the cohesive forces within the liquid. However, the molecules on the surface of a liquid are attracted only by about one-half as many molecules. Because of the unbalanced molecular attractions on the surface molecules, liquids contract to form a shape that minimizes the number...
