Pivot Bearings01:23

Pivot Bearings

2.3K
In mechanical systems, bearings are crucial in facilitating relative motion between two components while minimizing friction and wear. They help distribute various loads (radial, axial or a combination of both loads) across machinery parts, ensuring smooth and efficient operation.
A pivot bearing is a specialized type of bearing designed to support axial loads on a rotating shaft. The bearing surface, or the pivot, is positioned at the end of a shaft to support the axial thrust. The pivot may...

The Thoracic Cage: Ribs01:20

The Thoracic Cage: Ribs

9.3K
Ribs are curved, flattened bones forming the thoracic cavity wall with the thoracic muscles. There are 12 pairs of thoracic ribs. The posterior ends of all the ribs articulate with the T1–T12 thoracic vertebrae. In contrast, the anterior ends of most ribs attach to the sternum via their costal cartilages.
Parts of a Typical Rib
A typical rib has a head, neck, and body. The posterior end of the rib is called the head, followed by a narrow neck. The head articulates primarily with the costal...

Resistors In Series01:10

Resistors In Series

6.8K
A resistor is an ohmic device that limits the flow of charge in a circuit. Most circuits have more than one resistor. If several resistors are connected together and connected to a battery, the current supplied by the battery depends on the equivalent resistance of the circuit. The equivalent resistance of a combination of resistors depends on both their individual values and how they are connected. The simplest combination of resistors is the series combination.
In a series circuit, the...

Lateralization01:28

Lateralization

1.1K
Brain lateralization refers to the division of mental processes and functions between the two hemispheres of the brain, a phenomenon that optimizes neural efficiency and underpins complex abilities in humans. This specialization allows each hemisphere to perform tasks where it has a comparative advantage, facilitating more refined cognitive capabilities across different domains.

Series Resonance01:17

Series Resonance

887
The RLC circuit impedance is defined as the ratio of the supply voltage to the circuit current. Resonance in such a circuit occurs when the imaginary part of this impedance equals zero. This specific condition means that the inductive reactance is exactly equal to the capacitive reactance. The frequency at which this happens is known as the resonant frequency. Mathematically, the resonant frequency is inversely proportional to the square root of the product of the inductance (L) and capacitance...

Series and Parallel Capacitors01:14

Series and Parallel Capacitors

9.8K
Capacitors, fundamental components in electronic circuits, can be connected in series and/or parallel configurations. Each configuration has different impacts on the overall behavior of the circuit.
First, consider capacitors connected in series to a battery. In this configuration, the plate connected to the battery's positive terminal develops a positive charge, while the plate attached to the negative terminal becomes negatively charged. An equal magnitude of charge is induced on the...

Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Surgery
  • Thoracic Surgery
  • Surgical Techniques

Background:

  • Thoracic surgeries in veterinary medicine often require invasive surgical approaches.
  • Minimally invasive techniques are sought to reduce patient morbidity and improve outcomes.
  • Rib spreading thoracotomy is a common approach but can lead to significant postoperative pain.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe a modified rib pivot thoracotomy technique.
  • To evaluate the clinical application and outcomes of this technique in client-owned dogs and cats.
  • To assess the safety and efficacy of the modified rib pivot thoracotomy.

Main Methods:

  • A case series involving 24 dogs and 1 cat undergoing thoracic surgery.
  • Description of a lateral thoracic incision with latissimus dorsi muscle reflection.
  • A novel rib osteotomy and pivoting technique was employed to access the thoracic cavity.
  • Intrathoracic procedures included lung lobectomy, oesophagectomy, pericardectomy, and vascular ligations.

Main Results:

  • The modified rib pivot thoracotomy was successfully performed for various intrathoracic procedures.
  • Procedures included lung lobectomy (n=11), oesophagectomy (n=7), pericardectomy (n=5), and others.
  • The technique demonstrated good surgical exposure with only two cases experiencing minor postoperative complications (seroma).

Conclusions:

  • The modified rib pivot thoracotomy is a viable alternative lateral thoracic approach.
  • It offers excellent surgical exposure.
  • The technique is associated with minimal complications and low patient morbidity.
