Imaging Studies I: CT and MRI01:14

Imaging Studies I: CT and MRI

940
Introduction: MRI and CT scans are crucial advancements in medical imaging techniques, playing a vital role in diagnosing conditions related to the gastrointestinal (GI) system. Each scan serves distinct purposes, targets specific areas, and requires unique nursing duties.
Description of the Procedures
Computed Tomography (CT) scan:
Computed Tomography (CT) scans use X-ray technology to generate detailed images of bones, organs, and tissues. During the scan, the patient lies on a moving table...

Radiological Investigation III: Pulmonary Angiogram and PET Scan

487
Radiological investigations are paramount in the diagnosis and management of various pulmonary diseases. Two essential investigations are the Pulmonary Angiogram and the Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Scan.
Pulmonary Angiogram
A Pulmonary Angiogram is an invasive procedure involving injecting a contrast medium through a catheter threaded into the pulmonary artery or the right side of the heart to visualize the pulmonary vasculature. Computed Tomography (CT) scans have mainly replaced this...

Radiological Investigation II: MRI and Ventilation Perfusion Scan

645
Description
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Ventilation Perfusion Scans are two radiological investigations that offer detailed diagnostic images of the body, particularly lung structures.
MRI
MRI uses magnetic fields and radiofrequency signals to distinguish between normal and abnormal tissues. This technology provides a more detailed diagnostic image than CT scans, enabling it to characterize pulmonary nodules, stage bronchogenic carcinoma, and evaluate inflammatory activity in...

Aggression01:47

Aggression

30.4K
Humans engage in aggression when they seek to cause harm or pain to another person. Aggression takes two forms depending on one’s motives: hostile or instrumental. Hostile aggression is motivated by feelings of anger with intent to cause pain; a fight in a bar with a stranger is an example of hostile aggression. In contrast, instrumental aggression is motivated by achieving a goal and does not necessarily involve intent to cause pain (Berkowitz, 1993); a contract killer who murders for...

Empathy02:34

Empathy

10.2K
Some researchers suggest that altruism operates on empathy. Empathy is the capacity to understand another person’s perspective, to feel what he or she feels. An empathetic person makes an emotional connection with others and feels compelled to help (Batson, 1991). Empathy can be expressed in several ways, including cognitive, affective, and motor.

Summary

Positron emission tomography/magnetic resonance imaging (PET/MRI) offers complementary diagnostic information to PET/CT for various cancers. Advances in PET/MRI improve image quality and quantitative accuracy, enhancing oncological staging and restaging.

Area of Science:

  • Radiology
  • Medical Imaging
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) is a standard for oncological staging, using CT-derived attenuation maps for PET data correction.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) offers excellent anatomical detail but lacks direct data for PET attenuation correction, potentially impacting quantitative accuracy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the diagnostic performance and quantitative accuracy of PET/MRI compared to PET/CT in oncology.
  • To highlight methodological innovations enabling simultaneous PET/MRI acquisition and improved data correction.

Main Methods:

  • Utilizing standardized MRI sequences to segment tissue classes and generate empirical attenuation maps.
  • Employing advanced reconstruction algorithms and simultaneous PET/MRI acquisition with motion correction.
