Palatal rugae (PR) measurements show potential for sex prediction, with specific linear and angular measures correctly identifying gender in over 70% of cases. Further morphometric analysis is recommended alongside traditional classification methods.
Area of Science:
- Forensic Anthropology
- Dental Morphology
- Human Identification
Background:
- Palatal rugae (PR) research exists, but findings on sex dimorphism and prediction are inconclusive.
- Existing PR classification lacks precise morphometric linear and angular measurements.
Purpose of the Study:
- Assess dimensions and symmetry of the first three palatal rugae.
- Investigate sex dimorphism and predictive capability of PR measurements.
Main Methods:
- Analyzed 252 adult dental casts (119 males, 130 females) using laser scanning.
- Recorded linear and angular measurements of the first three palatal rugae.
- Utilized t-tests and logistic regression for statistical analysis.
Main Results:
- Palatal rugae showed significant lateral asymmetry in most bilateral measures.
- Males had larger values in 9 of 28 measured parameters.
- A combination of four linear and one angular measurement achieved 71.4% accuracy in sex classification.
Conclusions:
- Morphometric palatal rugae measurements show promise for sex prediction.
- Recommended to record morphometric measures alongside shape-based classifications for enhanced accuracy.

Prediction Intervals
However, the point estimate is most likely not the exact value of the population parameter, but close to it. After calculating point estimates, we construct interval estimates, called confidence intervals or prediction intervals. This prediction interval comprises a range of values unlike the point estimate and is a better predictor of the observed sample value, y.
