Slump Test01:20

Slump Test

921
The slump test is a widely used method to measure the workability of concrete. It employs a 12-inch high truncated cone mold that tapers from eight inches at the base to four inches at the top. Before testing, the mold is securely attached to a flat base and dampened.
Concrete is poured into the mold in three layers to conduct the test. Each layer is compacted 25 times with a steel tamping rod, which has a five-eighths-inch diameter and a rounded end, to ensure even distribution and eliminate...

Global Climate Change01:50

Global Climate Change

29.1K
Throughout its ~4.5 billion year history, the Earth has experienced periods of warming and cooling. However, the current drastic increase in global temperatures is well outside of the Earth’s cyclic norms, and evidence for human-caused global climate change is compelling. Paleoclimatology, the study of ancient climate conditions, provides ample evidence for human-caused global climate change by comparing recent conditions with those in the past.

Rates of Change01:20

Rates of Change

143
The rate of change is a central concept in mathematics that quantifies how one variable varies in response to another. It serves as a foundational tool in modeling dynamic systems across disciplines such as physics, biology, economics, and engineering. Understanding both average and instantaneous rates of change enables the analysis of behavior in functions that describe real-world phenomena.Average Rate of ChangeFor a function f(x) defined over an interval [x1,x2], the average rate of change...

Work Done During Volume Change01:17

Work Done During Volume Change

5.3K
In mechanics, work is done on an object when the force acting on it displaces the object. In thermodynamics, work done on a system can be estimated when the system's volume changes during any thermodynamic process.
Consider a gas confined to a cylinder fitted with a movable piston at one end. If the gas expands from volume V1 to volume V2, it exerts a force on the piston, such that the piston moves by a distance dr.
The work done by the gas on the piston can be expressed as

Net Change Theorem01:22

Net Change Theorem

80
The Net Change Theorem is a fundamental principle in calculus that establishes a direct relationship between a function’s rate of change and its accumulated change over an interval. Mathematically, it states that the definite integral of a function's derivative over a given interval [a,b] yields the net change in the original function:This theorem has significant applications in various real-world scenarios, including physics, economics, and engineering. A particularly useful application...

Le Chatelier's Principle: Changing Temperature02:19

Le Chatelier's Principle: Changing Temperature

35.7K
Consistent with the law of mass action, an equilibrium stressed by a change in concentration will shift to re-establish equilibrium without any change in the value of the equilibrium constant, K. When an equilibrium shifts in response to a temperature change, however, it is re-established with a different relative composition that exhibits a different value for the equilibrium constant.
To understand this phenomenon, consider the elementary reaction:

Summary

Neurodynamics techniques did not alter sciatic nerve stiffness in healthy individuals. This suggests neural tissue compliance, but further research is needed in different populations and with other techniques.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Biomechanics
  • Musculoskeletal rehabilitation

Background:

  • Neurodynamics techniques are used to assess and improve neural mechanosensitivity.
  • Limited in vivo evidence exists on the mechanical effects of neurodynamics on nerve stiffness.
  • This study investigates the immediate impact of a slump neurodynamics technique on sciatic nerve stiffness.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the immediate effects of a slump neurodynamics technique on sciatic nerve shear wave velocity (SWV), an indicator of nerve stiffness.
  • To assess changes in passive ankle dorsiflexion torque following the neurodynamics intervention.
  • To evaluate the reliability of SWV measurements for assessing nerve stiffness.

Main Methods:

  • Fourteen healthy participants underwent measurements of sciatic SWV and passive ankle torque during dorsiflexion.
  • The slump neurodynamics technique was applied for 3 minutes to one lower limb, with the contralateral limb serving as a control.
  • Measurements were taken before and immediately after the intervention.

Main Results:

  • The slump neurodynamics technique did not result in significant changes in sciatic SWV (P=0.78) or passive ankle dorsiflexion torque (P=0.14).
  • High intra-rater reliability for SWV measurements was observed (ICC=0.88).
  • Low standard error of measurement for SWV indicates measurement precision.

Conclusions:

  • Sciatic nerve stiffness in healthy individuals remains unchanged immediately after a slump neurodynamics technique.
  • This suggests neural tissue exhibits compliance under tensile loads.
  • Further investigation is recommended using different neurodynamics techniques and in populations with peripheral neuropathies.
