Competition

25.1K
When organisms require the same limited resources within an environment, they may have to compete for them. Competition is a net-negative interaction. Even if two competing individuals or populations do not interact directly, the overall fitness of both competitors is lowered as a result of not having full access to the limited resource.

Ecological Niches

26.8K
All organisms have a position within an ecosystem. The complete set of living and nonliving factors—including food resources, climate, and terrain—that define the position of a given organism are collectively referred to as the organism’s ecological niche.

Self-Schemas

36.4K
In general, a schema is a mental construct consisting of a cluster or collection of related concepts (Bartlett, 1932). There are many different types of schemata, and they all have one thing in common: schemata are a method of organizing information that allows the brain to work more efficiently. When a schema is activated, the brain makes immediate assumptions about the person or object being observed.

  • Head and Neck Surgery
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Dermoid cysts are uncommon, slow-growing neoplasms in the head and neck.
  • Symptoms are typically non-specific, correlating with lesion size and location.
  • Epiglottic dermoid cysts represent an exceptionally rare clinical presentation.

Observation:

  • This study reports an exceptionally rare case of a dermoid cyst originating from the epiglottis.
  • This represents only the second documented instance in English literature.

Findings:

  • The epiglottic dermoid cyst presented with non-specific symptoms related to its location.
  • Detailed characteristics of this rare condition were observed.
