    Summary

    Autotransfusion, a method of collecting and reinfusing a patient's own blood, proved safe and effective in plastic surgery patients. This technique led to quicker recovery and reduced patient anxiety regarding disease transmission.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of autotransfusion in patients undergoing elective major plastic surgery.
    • To assess patient outcomes, including recovery time and psychological well-being, following autotransfusion.

    • One hundred and eight patients scheduled for elective major plastic surgery (primarily reduction mammaplasties) were included.
    • Autologous blood units were collected 1-2 weeks prior to surgery.
    • Patients were monitored for complications related to phlebotomy and autotransfusion.

    • Hematocrit and hemoglobin levels nearly returned to predonation levels by surgery.
