We introduce MonoRes, an automatic method to determine local resolution in 3D maps using the monogenic signal. This accurate and fast approach enhances electron microscopy data analysis.
Area of Science:
- Electron microscopy
- Image processing
- Computational imaging
Background:
- Resolution is a critical parameter in electron microscopy.
- Accurate determination of local resolution in 3D maps is essential for data interpretation.
- Existing methods for resolution assessment can be time-consuming and require user input.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop a fully automatic and accurate method for determining the local resolution of 3D maps.
- To introduce the monogenic signal as a foundation for resolution assessment.
- To provide a computationally efficient alternative to current resolution determination techniques.
Main Methods:
- The MonoRes algorithm extends the analytic signal concept to the monogenic signal.
- 3D maps are filtered across various frequencies.
- The amplitude of the monogenic signal is computed to establish a resolution criterion at each voxel.
Main Results:
- MonoRes is fully automatic, requiring no user parameters.
- The method demonstrates high accuracy across all tested scenarios.
- MonoRes is computationally faster than existing resolution assessment methods.
- An optional local filtering feature based on determined resolution is available.
Conclusions:
- MonoRes provides a robust, automated solution for local resolution determination in 3D electron microscopy maps.
- The monogenic signal offers a powerful tool for quantitative image analysis.
- This method significantly improves the efficiency and accuracy of 3D map analysis in electron microscopy.
