Skilled midwifery care significantly reduces maternal mortality.
In East Africa, midwifery is often integrated into nursing roles, creating a gap in specialized training.

To describe a flexible, competency-based Bachelor of Science in Midwifery (BScM) program.
To develop skilled midwives meeting international competency standards (ICM).
To enhance midwifery leadership in East Africa.

A Bachelor of Science in Midwifery (BScM) program was developed.
The program is competency-based and flexible, allowing study two days a week.
It builds upon a successful Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) work/study model.

The BScM program enables licensed diploma midwives to pursue a bachelor's degree while employed.
It fosters development of leadership, clinical, and critical thinking competencies.
Provides a pathway to increase skilled East African midwives educated to global standards.
