What is Population Genetics?

A population is composed of members of the same species that simultaneously live and interact in the same area. When individuals in a population breed, they pass down their genes to their offspring. Many of these genes are polymorphic, meaning that they occur in multiple variants. Such variations of a gene are referred to as alleles. The collective set of all the alleles within a population is known as the gene pool.

Background:

The prevalence, hospitalization patterns, and outcomes of pediatric and adolescent syncope are not well-characterized.
Syncope in young individuals presents unique challenges in diagnosis and management.

Purpose of the Study:

To characterize the prevalence, hospitalization patterns, and outcomes of pediatric and adolescent syncope.
To examine temporal trends and differences in patient characteristics and outcomes based on emergency department (ED) discharge status.

Main Methods:

Retrospective analysis of patients under 20 years old diagnosed with syncope (ICD-10 code R55) in Alberta, Canada, from FY 2006/2007 to FY 2013/2014.
Patients were categorized into two groups: admitted to hospital or discharged from the ED.
Comparison of baseline characteristics, medication use, and short-term (30-day) and long-term (1-year) outcomes between the two groups.

Main Results:

The prevalence of syncope increased from 143 to 166 per 100,000 population (P < 0.01).
The majority of patients (98%) were discharged from the ED; however, 12.7% had cardiac disease and 8% had thoracic conditions.
Admitted patients experienced higher rates of 30-day and 1-year ED revisits and rehospitalizations compared to discharged patients.

Conclusions:

Pediatric and adolescent syncope is increasing in prevalence, indicating a growing public health issue.
This population often has comorbidities contributing to high healthcare resource utilization and polypharmacy.
The findings highlight the need for further investigation into the management and long-term outcomes of syncope in young individuals.
