Background:

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental disorder with a poorly understood etiology.
Emerging evidence suggests potential involvement of immune system dysregulation in ASD pathogenesis.
Investigating immune mechanisms may offer insights into the biological underpinnings of autism.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate immune system function in individuals diagnosed with autism.
To determine if specific immune abnormalities are associated with autism.
To explore the potential role of immune mechanisms in the development of autism.

Main Methods:

A cohort of 31 patients with autism was studied.
Immune system parameters were assessed, including lymphocyte blastogenesis assays.
T lymphocyte subsets and their ratios were analyzed.

Main Results:

Patients with autism exhibited reduced lymphocyte responsiveness to common mitogens (phytohemagglutinin, concanavalin A, pokeweed mitogen).
A decrease in the total number of T lymphocytes was observed in the autistic group.
An altered ratio of helper to suppressor T cells was identified in patients with autism.

Conclusions:

The study identified significant immune system abnormalities in individuals with autism.
These immune alterations may be directly associated with the biological processes underlying autism.
Alternatively, immune changes could be an indirect consequence of the pathological mechanisms in autism.
