The interleukin-13 (IL-13) -1112C/T polymorphism is linked to chronic periodontitis risk. This genetic factor may not influence aggressive periodontitis susceptibility, warranting further research.
Area of Science:
- Genetics
- Immunology
- Periodontology
Background:
- Conflicting findings exist regarding the association between the IL-13 -1112C/T polymorphism and periodontitis risk.
- Previous studies have yielded inconsistent conclusions on this genetic link.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association between the IL-13 -1112C/T polymorphism and susceptibility to periodontitis.
- To clarify the role of this specific IL-13 gene variant in the development of periodontal disease.
Main Methods:
- A meta-analysis was conducted using studies from multiple electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, CNKI, Wanfang) up to November 30, 2016.
- Case-control studies examining the IL-13 -1112 polymorphism and periodontitis were selected, with data analyzed using STATA 12.0.
- Study quality was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale, and odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals were calculated.
Main Results:
- The meta-analysis included 5 case-control studies (710 cases, 671 controls).
- Significant associations were found for CC vs TT, CT vs TT, and TT vs CT+CC models of the IL-13 -1112 polymorphism in relation to periodontitis susceptibility.
- Subgroup analysis revealed significant associations in chronic periodontitis but not in aggressive periodontitis.
Conclusions:
- The IL-13 -1112 polymorphism may be associated with periodontitis susceptibility, particularly chronic periodontitis.
- No significant association was observed between the IL-13 -1112 polymorphism and aggressive periodontitis.
- Further large-scale, multi-ethnic case-control studies are recommended to validate these findings.
