Crossover Experiments

Crossover experiments, also called the repeated-measurements design, is a study design in which all experimental units are exposed to all treatments in different periods. Crossover experiments are generally used in psychology, the pharmaceutical industry, agriculture, and medicine.
Crossover designs are performed even with smaller sample sizes since the samples can act as their controls. These are better than simple randomized trials since patients are exposed to all the treatments.

Background:

Whole slide imaging (WSI) implementation for routine clinical practice remains limited globally.
This study details the successful transition to a complete digital surgical pathology workflow at Cannizzaro Hospital, Catania, Italy.

Purpose of the Study:

To describe the implementation of a digital surgical pathology workflow.
To identify key factors for successful adoption of WSI in routine diagnostics.

Main Methods:

Digitization of all permanent histopathology glass slides (100%) at ×20 magnification using Aperio AT2 scanners.
Integration of eSlide Manager software with the anatomic pathology laboratory information system.
Utilized a 2D barcode tracking system and modified histology workflow processes.

Main Results:

Over 115,000 glass slides digitized with a 1% scan fail rate.
Pre-scanning slide drying minimized scanner rack adhesion.
Successful implementation required workflow modifications and barcode system integration.

Conclusions:

Optimizing preimaging variables and LIS integration are crucial for WSI adoption, more so than IT infrastructure or pathologist buy-in.
Digital pathology implementation facilitates workflow standardization and leverages digital imaging benefits.
