Area of Science:

  • Natural Product Chemistry
  • Phytochemistry
  • Medicinal Chemistry

Background:

  • Mirabilis himalaica is a plant species with potential medicinal properties.
  • Flavonoids and rotenoids are classes of natural compounds known for diverse biological activities.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To isolate and characterize novel and known flavonoids and rotenoids from Mirabilis himalaica roots.
  • To evaluate the cytotoxic potential of the isolated compounds against human cancer cell lines.

Main Methods:

  • Isolation of compounds using solvent extraction (ethyl acetate).
  • Structure elucidation through comprehensive spectroscopic analyses (HRESIMS, UV, NMR, ECD).
  • Cytotoxicity assays against A375 (melanoma), A549 (lung), and PLC (hepatoma) cell lines.

Main Results:

  • Six previously undescribed flavonoids were identified.
  • Eight known flavonoids, including one not previously reported as a natural product, were isolated.
  • Seven known rotenoids were also isolated and characterized.
  • The isolated compounds were assessed for their cytotoxic effects on three human cancer cell lines.

Conclusions:

  • The study successfully identified a diverse array of flavonoids and rotenoids from Mirabilis himalaica.
  • The isolated compounds represent potential leads for further investigation in cancer therapy.
