Summary

Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) in ulcerative colitis (UC) patients can be effectively treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). This case study shows HBOT successfully resolved skin lesions in a UC patient, offering a safe alternative treatment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report a case of successful treatment of pyoderma gangrenosum in an ulcerative colitis patient using hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT).
  • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of HBOT as an alternative treatment for PG associated with UC.

Main Methods:

  • A case report of a patient with both UC and PG.
  • Treatment involved surgical debridement and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT).
  • Patient was also managed for UC with mesalazine and azathioprine, later switched to mesalazine alone.

Main Results:

  • The patient's pyoderma gangrenosum completely resolved after 3 months of HBOT and topical treatment.
  • Ulcerative colitis remained in remission with mesalazine monotherapy.

  • Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) may be an effective and safe treatment option for pyoderma gangrenosum in patients with ulcerative colitis.
  • HBOT is particularly relevant for patients who may not require anti-tumor necrosis factor agents.
  • This case highlights a potential therapeutic strategy for a rare but debilitating comorbidity.
