Summary

Multifaceted interventions significantly reduced asthma exacerbations in elderly patients. Continuous magnesium supplementation may also improve lung function (FEV1) in this population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the effectiveness of multifaceted interventions in decreasing acute asthma exacerbations among elderly individuals.
  • To investigate the impact of comprehensive care strategies on asthma control in older adults.

Main Methods:

  • A 1-year study involving 100 elderly asthmatics (≥65 years) receiving multifaceted interventions.
  • Interventions included education, action plans, adherence support (SMS), and oral magnesium.
  • Primary outcome measured was the rate of acute asthma exacerbations compared to the preceding year.

Main Results:

  • A significant reduction in acute asthma exacerbations from 67% to 50% (p=0.001) was observed.
  • Improvements in lung function, including forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC), were noted (p=0.04, p=0.036).
  • Subgroup analysis showed continued magnesium use significantly increased predicted FEV1 (p=0.008).

Conclusions:

  • A multifaceted approach, enhancing medical awareness, inhaler technique, caregiver support, and addressing micronutrient deficiencies, is effective for reducing exacerbations in elderly asthmatics.
  • Continuous oral magnesium supplementation may offer additional benefits by improving FEV1 in this demographic.
