Background:

Children with Down syndrome often face challenges in early reading development.
Tailoring interventions to the Down syndrome behavioral phenotype is crucial for effective learning.

Purpose of the Study:

To replicate and assess the efficacy and feasibility of a specialized early reading intervention for children with Down syndrome.
To investigate the intervention's alignment with the Down syndrome behavioral phenotype.

Main Methods:

A multiple-probe across lessons single-case design was employed.
Six children aged 7–10 years with Down syndrome participated.
The intervention was designed based on the Down syndrome behavioral phenotype.

Main Results:

A functional relation between the intervention and reading outcomes was found for four participants.
One participant showed mixed results, while another demonstrated no functional relation.
The findings highlight variability in response to the intervention.

Conclusions:

The early reading intervention shows promise for some children with Down syndrome.
Further research into aptitude-by-treatment interactions can help personalize interventions for specific learner subgroups.
This approach may optimize reading outcomes for children with Down syndrome.
