Context:

Spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) are a widely used model for studying cardiovascular diseases.
Limited data exists on the spontaneous occurrence of tumors in SHR, particularly osteosarcoma.

Purpose:

To document and characterize spontaneous osteosarcoma development in a cohort of spontaneously hypertensive rats.
To investigate potential correlations between tumor development and serum alkaline phosphatase (A1-P) levels.

Summary:

Over a five-year period, 18 cases of osteosarcoma were identified in 9132 spontaneously hypertensive rats.
Tumors appeared between 72 and 145 days of age, primarily affecting the skull, caudal vertebrae, and limbs.
Histologically, tumors comprised sarcomatous tissue with osteoid and cartilage; metastasis was absent.

Tumor-bearing rats exhibited A1-P levels twice as high as tumor-free rats.

Associated conditions included bronchiectasis and submaxillary lymph node abscesses.

Impact:

This study provides valuable data on the incidence and characteristics of spontaneous osteosarcoma in SHR.
Findings highlight the importance of considering neoplastic diseases in SHR research.
Elevated A1-P levels may serve as a potential biomarker for osteosarcoma in this model.
