Summary

Surgical trainees demonstrated superior visual spatial ability compared to controls. However, a small percentage of trainees performed below their peers, warranting further investigation into their learning needs for image-guided procedures.

  • Standardized tests included Card Rotation, Cube Comparison, and Map-Planning.

  • Surgical trainees significantly outperformed controls on all visual spatial tests.
  • 2% of trainees performed significantly worse than their peers on Card Rotation and Map-Planning.
  • Over 1% of trainees performed significantly worse than their peers on the Cube Comparison test.

Conclusions:

  • While trainees generally excel, a small subset shows lower visual spatial ability.
  • Further research is needed to understand the implications for trainees struggling with image-guided procedure skills.
