Summary

This study explored combining aerobic exercise with task-specific training for stroke survivors. The combined approach proved feasible and beneficial for improving upper limb function and aerobic fitness in both subacute and chronic stroke patients.

  • The intervention involved 30 minutes of lower limb cycling followed by 30 minutes of upper limb training, three times weekly for 8 weeks.

Findings:

  • The combined intervention was feasible, acceptable, and beneficial.
  • Both participants showed improvements in upper limb motor function, measured by the Action Research Arm Test (ARAT) and Wolf Motor Function Test (WMFT).
  • Aerobic fitness and 6-minute walking distance also improved in both participants.

Implications:

  • Combining aerobic exercise with task-specific training may be a valuable therapeutic strategy for upper limb motor recovery after stroke.
  • This approach appears suitable for individuals in both subacute and chronic stroke recovery phases.
  • Further research is warranted to validate these findings in larger stroke populations.
