Platelet function and coagulation in normal and preeclamptic pregnancy.

F Pekonen, V Rasi, M Ammälä

    Thrombosis Research
    |September 1, 1986
    PubMed
    Summary

Pregnancy alters coagulation and platelet activation, with rising beta-thromboglobulin and factor VIII levels. Severe preeclampsia shows decreased Antithrombin III (AT III) and increased platelet activation markers.

    Area of Science:

    • Obstetrics and Gynecology
    • Hematology
    • Cardiovascular Research

    Background:

    • Pregnancy is associated with significant hemostatic changes.
    • Understanding these changes is crucial for managing pregnancy complications.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To prospectively investigate platelet function and coagulation activity during normal pregnancy and puerperium.
    • To compare these parameters in healthy pregnancies versus those with mild and severe preeclampsia.

    Main Methods:

    • Prospective study of 17 healthy women throughout pregnancy and puerperium.
    • Monitoring of plasma beta-thromboglobulin, platelet count, lifespan, thromboxane B2, factor VIII:C, factor VIIIR:Ag, and Antithrombin III (AT III).

    Main Results:

    Related Experiment Videos

    • Progressive increase in plasma beta-thromboglobulin during normal pregnancy, without changes in platelet count or lifespan.
    • Elevated factor VIII:C and factor VIIIR:Ag, leading to an increased FVIIIR:Ag/FVIII:C ratio.
    • In severe preeclampsia, increased beta-thromboglobulin, decreased AT III, and an elevated FVIIIR:Ag/FVIII:C ratio were observed, while platelet count and FVIII:C remained normal.

    Conclusions:

    • Normal pregnancy induces specific changes in platelet activation and coagulation factors.
    • Severe preeclampsia is characterized by distinct alterations in hemostasis, including reduced AT III and heightened platelet activation.
