Plant Breeding and Biotechnology

21.9K
Crop cultivation has a long history in human civilization, with records showing the cultivation of cereal plants beginning at around 8000 BC. This early plant breeding was developed primarily to provide a steady supply of food.

Variability: Analysis01:11

Variability: Analysis

541
Measures of variability are statistical metrics that reveal the dispersion pattern within a dataset. They are pivotal in biostatistics, providing insights into the heterogeneity within health and biological data. Variability signifies the degree to which data points diverge from one another, helping researchers understand the potential range of values and associated uncertainty within the data.
The range is a simple measure of variability, indicating the difference between the highest and...

Random Variables01:09

Random Variables

17.9K
A random variable is a single numerical value that indicates the outcome of a procedure. The concept of random variables is fundamental to the probability theory and was introduced by a Russian mathematician, Pafnuty Chebyshev, in the mid-nineteenth century.
Uppercase letters such as X or Y denote a random variable. Lowercase letters like x or y denote the value of a random variable. If X is a random variable, then X is written in words, and x is given as a number.
For example, let X = the...

Plant Hormones01:56

Plant Hormones

27.8K
Plant hormones—or phytohormones—are chemical molecules that modulate one or more physiological processes of a plant. In animals, hormones are often produced in specific glands and circulated via the circulatory system. However, plants lack hormone-producing glands.

Plant Cells and Tissues02:01

Plant Cells and Tissues

65.9K
Plant tissues are collections of similar cells performing related functions. Different plant tissues will have their own specialized roles and can be combined with other tissues to form organs such as flowers, fruit, stem, and leaves. Two major types of plant tissue include meristematic and permanent tissue.

Naturalistic Observations02:30

Naturalistic Observations

17.6K
If you want to understand how behavior occurs, one of the best ways to gain information is to simply observe the behavior in its natural context. However, people might change their behavior in unexpected ways if they know they are being observed. How do researchers obtain accurate information when people tend to hide their natural behavior? As an example, imagine that your professor asks everyone in your class to raise their hand if they always wash their hands after using the restroom. Chances...

Summary

Observer variability in plant phenotyping is minimal and does not impact leaf count trends. Citizen scientists can accurately annotate leaf counts, offering a viable alternative to experts for image-based phenotyping tasks.

Area of Science:

  • Plant Science
  • Computational Biology
  • Bioinformatics

Background:

  • Image-based plant phenotyping is crucial for understanding genotype-environment interactions.
  • Image analysis and machine learning are key tools in phenotyping, but human observer input is relied upon as a gold standard.
  • Variability among observers, both experienced and non-experienced, in phenotyping tasks needs to be quantified.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To measure intra- and inter-observer variability in leaf count annotation.
  • To compare the performance of experienced vs. non-experienced observers and citizen scientists.
  • To evaluate the impact of specialized annotation tools and citizen-powered platforms on data accuracy.

Main Methods:

  • Comparison of experienced and non-experienced observers annotating leaf counts in *Arabidopsis thaliana* images.
  • Utilizing controlled studies with specialized annotation tools and a citizen-powered web platform.
  • Assessing leaf count variability using low and high-resolution images and comparing with a machine-learning algorithm.

Main Results:

  • Specialized tools reduce intra-observer variability in leaf counting.
  • Observer variability does not significantly affect longitudinal leaf count trend assessments.
  • Citizen scientists can provide statistically accurate leaf counts, comparable to experts.

Conclusions:

  • Non-experienced observers and citizen scientists can be valuable for image-based phenotyping annotation tasks with proper design.
  • Automated algorithms performing within observer variability are suitable alternatives.
  • Citizen-powered platforms can engage the public in important scientific research.
