    Summary

Early fetal ultrasound revealed a transient echogenic umbilical cord mass, representing normal bowel migration. This finding, seen at 7-10 weeks gestational age, is distinct from abdominal wall defects like omphalocele.

    Area of Science:

    • Fetal Medicine
    • Diagnostic Ultrasound
    • Embryology

    Background:

    • Fetal gastrointestinal development involves complex migration patterns.
    • Distinguishing normal embryological events from congenital anomalies is crucial in prenatal diagnosis.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To describe the sonographic appearance of normal fetal bowel migration in early gestation.
    • To differentiate this physiological process from abdominal wall defects.

    Main Methods:

    • Ultrasound scanning of ten fetuses between 7-10 weeks gestational age.
    • Serial examinations 4-12 weeks later to track anatomical changes.

    Main Results:

    • An echogenic umbilical cord mass (0.5-1.0 cm) was consistently observed at the fetal abdominal insertion site.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • This mass resolved by later scans, with normal fetal bowel visualized within the abdomen.
  • Conclusions:

    • The transient umbilical cord mass represents normal physiological bowel migration.
    • This sonographic finding should not be misdiagnosed as omphalocele or gastroschisis.
