Reciproc files caused the most root canal transportation, while BioRaCe files demonstrated superior centering ability in mesiodistal and buccolingual directions. No system achieved perfect centering ability.
Area of Science:
- Endodontics
- Dental Materials Science
Background:
- Root canal preparation aims to clean and shape the root canal system.
- Nickel-titanium (NiTi) rotary and reciprocating files are commonly used for root canal preparation.
- Evaluating file performance regarding transportation and centering ability is crucial for predictable outcomes.
Purpose of the Study:
- To compare the transportation and centering ability of different continuous and reciprocating NiTi endodontic file systems.
- To assess the effectiveness of various file systems in maintaining the original root canal anatomy.
Main Methods:
- Ninety-six mandibular molars were divided into 6 groups (n=16), each using a specific NiTi file system (ProTaper Next, ProTaper Gold, Mtwo, BioRaCe, WaveOne Gold, Reciproc).
- Root canals were prepared according to manufacturers' instructions.
- Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans were taken before and after preparation to measure transportation and centering ability at defined points.
Main Results:
- Reciproc files exhibited the greatest mesiodistal and buccolingual transportation.
- BioRaCe files showed the best mesiodistal centering ability.
- Buccolingual centering ability was highest with BioRaCe and Mtwo files.
Conclusions:
- All tested file systems resulted in some degree of root canal transportation.
- No file system achieved ideal centering ability, indicating potential for procedural errors.
- Reciproc files induced significant transportation, while BioRaCe and Mtwo offered better control over canal centering.
