This study developed a handwriting analysis protocol to objectively assess major depressive disorder (MDD). The improved method showed reliable agreement among graphologists and with psychiatric diagnoses, aiding early MDD detection.
Area of Science:
- Psychiatry
- Psychology
- Forensic Science
Background:
- Major depressive disorder (MDD) diagnosis relies on subjective clinical assessments.
- Objective tools are needed to support early and accurate MDD detection.
- Graphological analysis, the study of handwriting, has potential for objective assessment.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and validate a novel handwriting analysis protocol for assessing severe MDD.
- To determine if graphological analysis can serve as an objective diagnostic tool for clinicians.
- To improve upon existing graphological methodologies for MDD assessment.
Main Methods:
- A modified handwriting analysis protocol was developed, incorporating literature review and preliminary case observations.
- Eighty participants were recruited: 44 with MDD (clinical sample) and 36 healthy controls.
- Cohen's Kappa statistic was used to measure inter-rater reliability among graphologists and agreement with psychiatric diagnoses.
Main Results:
- The developed protocol demonstrated satisfactory reliability and agreement.
- Inter-rater reliability among four graphologists was substantial (Kappa = .62).
- Agreement between psychiatric assessments and graphologists' ratings ranged from Kappa = .47 to .60.
Conclusions:
- The enhanced graphological protocol shows promise as an objective tool for MDD assessment.
- The findings support the utility of handwriting analysis in supporting early MDD diagnosis.
- Further research is warranted to validate and refine this objective diagnostic approach.

Freezing Point Depression and Boiling Point Elevation
The boiling point of a liquid is the temperature at which its vapor pressure is equal to ambient atmospheric pressure. Since the vapor pressure of a solution is lowered due to the presence of nonvolatile solutes, it stands to reason that the solution’s boiling point will subsequently be increased. Vapor pressure increases with temperature, and so a solution will require a higher temperature than will pure solvent to achieve any given vapor pressure, including one...
