Short-distance Transport of Resources02:12

Short-distance Transport of Resources

17.8K
Short-distance transport refers to transport that occurs over a distance of just 2-3 cells, crossing the plasma membrane in the process. Small uncharged molecules, such as oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water, can diffuse across the plasma membrane on their own. In contrast, ions and larger molecules require the assistance of transport proteins due to their charge or size. Transport across membranes also occurs within individual cells, playing a variety of essential roles for the plant as a whole.

Continuing Care

2.0K
Continuing care describes the variety of health, personal, and social services provided over a prolonged period. The need for continuing care is increasing because people are living longer. Many people do not have families or others to care for them. Continuing care is mainly for patients who are disabled, functionally dependent, or suffering from a terminal disease. It is available within institutional settings or in homes. Examples include nursing centers or facilities, assisted living,...

Introduction
An ostomy is a surgical procedure that creates an artificial opening from the intestines to the outside of the body, allowing for the rerouting of effluent. This opening is known as a stoma. A stoma usually protrudes above the skin surface, appearing pink or red, moist, and round, and it lacks nerve sensations.
There are different types of ostomies, including colostomies, ileostomies, and urostomies:

Area of Science:

  • Global Health
  • Palliative Care
  • Pediatric Care

Background:

  • Paediatric palliative care (PPC) is crucial for children globally, with millions needing services, yet access is severely limited, particularly in resource-poor settings.
  • The Lancet has recognized the importance of PPC within the global health agenda, including universal health coverage.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To highlight the global need for paediatric palliative care (PPC) services.
  • To identify challenges hindering PPC development worldwide.
  • To discuss strategies for overcoming these challenges and improving access to PPC, especially in resource-poor settings.

Main Methods:

  • Review of global statistics on the need for paediatric palliative care.
  • Identification and analysis of barriers to PPC development.
  • Exploration of strategies to enhance PPC provision.

Main Results:

  • An estimated 21.6 million children globally require palliative care (PC), with 8.2 million needing specialist services.
  • Key challenges include limited access to treatment and medications (like oral morphine), opiophobia, workforce shortages, policy gaps, and lack of awareness.
  • Effective strategies involve advocacy, public awareness, education, improved medication access, implementation efforts, and research.

Conclusions:

  • High-quality PPC can be delivered even in resource-poor settings.
  • There is an urgent global need to scale up affordable, accessible, and quality PPC services.
  • Ensuring all children requiring palliative care can access it is a critical global health imperative.
