    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To identify the specific microorganisms responsible for marine-related wound infections.
    • To analyze marine wound infections in the Gascoyne region of Western Australia.

    • Prospective study design.
    • Inclusion of 28 consenting patients with suppurating marine wounds.
    • Wound swab cultures collected from emergency departments in Carnarvon and Exmouth.

    • Positive bacterial cultures were obtained from 27 out of 28 patients (96.4%).
    • Staphylococcus aureus was the most common pathogen (64.3%), followed by Vibrio species (32.1%).
    • Polymicrobial infections were observed in 39.3% of cases.

    • Staphylococcus aureus and Vibrio species are frequently implicated in marine wound infections.
    • Marine wound infections in this region are often polymicrobial.
    • Empirical oral antibiotic therapy combining flucloxacillin (or clindamycin) with doxycycline (or ciprofloxacin) is suggested for adults.
