    Area of Science:

    • Dermatology
    • Botany
    • Allergology

    Background:

    • Grevillea 'Robyn Gordon' is a popular Australian hybrid plant.
    • Increased global export of this plant raises concerns about potential allergic reactions.

    Observation:

    • An increasing incidence of allergic contact dermatitis linked to Grevillea 'Robyn Gordon' has been observed.
    • 24 patients suspected of sensitivity underwent patch testing with positive confirmation.

    Findings:

    • Patch testing identified cross-sensitivity to Toxicodendron, suggesting a shared allergenic mechanism.
    • Long-chain alkyl resorcinols, specifically tridecylresorcinol, are implicated as the sensitizing agents in Grevillea 'Robyn Gordon' allergy.
    • Chemical structures of allergens in Grevillea and Toxicodendron are closely related.

    Implications:

    • The sensitizing potential of alkyl resorcinols may extend to other Grevillea species, such as Grevillea robusta.
    • As Grevillea 'Robyn Gordon' spreads to new markets, allergic contact dermatitis cases are expected to rise.
    • This research highlights the need for awareness and diagnostic strategies for Grevillea-induced dermatitis.
