    Summary

    Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) did not reveal typical Alzheimer's disease changes in adults with Down syndrome. Brain scans showed no visible lesions, suggesting MRI may not detect early Alzheimer's pathology in this population.

    Background:

    • Down syndrome is associated with a high incidence of Alzheimer's-type neuropathology in adults over 40.
    • Early detection of neuropathologic changes is crucial for understanding disease progression.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the utility of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in visualizing Alzheimer's-related neuropathologic changes in adults with Down syndrome.
    • To assess for the presence of specific lesions in the frontal and temporal lobes.

    Main Methods:

    • Seven patients with Down syndrome (ages 17-45) underwent MRI scans at 0.15 Tesla.
    • Scans focused on detecting abnormalities in the frontal and temporal lobes and white matter lesions.
