Higher education levels are more common in cervical artery dissection (CeAD) patients than in ischemic stroke (IS) patients. University education in CeAD patients is linked to better clinical outcomes.
Area of Science:
- Neurology
- Epidemiology
- Medical Education
Background:
- Cervical artery dissection (CeAD) is a significant cause of stroke in younger adults.
- Understanding patient demographics and their association with stroke etiology and outcomes is crucial for targeted prevention and treatment strategies.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine if university education is more prevalent in patients with CeAD compared to age- and sex-matched patients with ischemic stroke (IS) from other causes.
- To investigate the association between university education and clinical outcomes in CeAD patients.
Main Methods:
- Analysis of 715 CeAD patients and 631 non-CeAD IS patients from the Cervical Artery Dissection and Ischemic Stroke Patients study.
- Assessment of university education based on self-reported profession.
- Evaluation of clinical outcome at 3 months using the modified Rankin Scale (mRS).
Main Results:
- University education was more frequent in CeAD patients (19.3%) than in non-CeAD IS patients (13.4%, p=0.008).
- CeAD patients with university education showed significant differences in smoking rates (39% vs. 57%) and excellent outcomes (80% vs. 66%, p=0.004).
- University education was independently associated with excellent outcomes in CeAD patients (OR 2.44, 95% CI 1.37-5.38).
Conclusions:
- A higher rate of university education was observed in CeAD patients compared to non-CeAD IS patients.
- University education is associated with a favorable clinical outcome in CeAD patients.
- The underlying mechanisms linking university education to better outcomes in CeAD require further investigation.
