The Apollo Onyx Delivery Microcatheter safely and effectively reduced microcatheter entrapment during ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (Onyx) embolizations in neurointerventional procedures. No entrapment or vessel injury occurred, with minimal leakage observed.
Area of Science:
- Neurosurgery
- Interventional Radiology
- Medical Device Technology
Background:
- Microcatheter entrapment is a risk during ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (Onyx) embolizations.
- The Apollo Onyx Delivery Microcatheter was designed to mitigate this risk.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the safety and efficacy of the Apollo Onyx Delivery Microcatheter.
- To assess its performance in various neurointerventional procedures.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective review of 58 Onyx embolizations using the Apollo Microcatheter (July 2014 - August 2016).
- Data collected included patient diagnoses, procedural details, and clinical outcomes.
Main Results:
- No instances of microcatheter entrapment, inadvertent detachment, or vessel injury were reported.
- Two cases (3.5%) of Onyx leakage from the detachment site occurred without adverse events.
- Nearly all embolizations achieved their intended goals.
Conclusions:
- The Apollo Microcatheter is safe and effective for neurointerventional embolizations with Onyx.
- Onyx leakage is an infrequent technical complication.
