Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the neural processing of social decision-making based on perceived gaze direction.
  • To explore how direct versus averted gaze affects choices in an economic game.

Main Methods:

  • Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used.
  • 27 female participants completed an economic exchange game with direct or averted gaze stimuli.

Main Results:

  • Averted gaze, unlike direct gaze, showed increased activation in the right superior temporal gyrus (STG).
  • Functional coupling between the right STG and posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) was greater with averted gaze.
  • Higher right STG activation correlated with faster prosocial choices during averted gaze.

Conclusions:

  • Absence of direct social contact cues (via averted gaze) engages deeper cognitive processing for prosocial decisions.
  • Findings highlight the role of subtle social cues in prosocial behavior.
  • Results may inform understanding of social cue processing deficits in autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
