The enteral drug administration involves three primary routes: oral, sublingual, and buccal. Oral ingestion is the most prevalent, safe, economical, and convenient method for drug administration. However, it has certain drawbacks, including limited absorption due to the drug's low water solubility or poor membrane permeability, possible emesis from GI mucosa irritation, destruction of drugs by digestive enzymes or low gastric pH, and irregular absorption along with food or other drugs.

Summary

Preventable surgical cancellations after patients enter the operating room can be reduced. Improving preoperative evaluations and patient health assessments are key to minimizing these costly delays.

Background:

Surgery cancellations lead to operating room inefficiency and wasted time.
Understanding the frequency and reasons for intraoperative cancellations is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

To determine the frequency and causes of surgery cancellations after patients entered the operating room.
To assess the preventability of these intraoperative cancellations.

Main Methods:

Retrospective chart review of surgical procedures under general anesthesia (2008-2016).
Analysis of reasons for cancellation after patient entry into the operating room.

Main Results:

30 surgeries were cancelled after patient entry and anesthesia preparation.
55.6% of cancellations before anesthesia induction were preventable (36.7% of total).
Post-anesthesia cancellations were primarily due to patient health status.

Conclusions:

Enhanced preoperative evaluation systems can decrease intraoperative cancellations.
Systemic improvements in patient medical assessment are needed to reduce cancellations post-anesthesia entry.
