Drug Delivery: Enteral Route01:18

Drug Delivery: Enteral Route

1.9K
The enteral drug administration involves three primary routes: oral, sublingual, and buccal. Oral ingestion is the most prevalent, safe, economical, and convenient method for drug administration. However, it has certain drawbacks, including limited absorption due to the drug's low water solubility or poor membrane permeability, possible emesis from GI mucosa irritation, destruction of drugs by digestive enzymes or low gastric pH, and irregular absorption along with food or other drugs.

Real Number Operations

343
The concept of real numbers includes all the values that can be represented on a continuous number line. The system began with basic counting values used for enumeration. It later expanded to include values that represent the absence of quantity and opposites of the counting values. When situations required expressing parts of a whole or dividing quantities evenly, values capable of representing such proportions were developed. When written using decimal notation, these values can end or repeat...

Operational Amplifiers01:17

Operational Amplifiers

2.0K
The operational amplifier, often referred to as an op-amp, is a multifaceted building block of a circuit. This electronic component functions like a voltage-controlled voltage source and can also be used to create a voltage- or current-controlled current source. The design of an operational amplifier enables it to execute mathematical operations when external components like resistors and capacitors are linked to its terminals. An op-amp has the capacity to sum signals, amplify a signal,...

Routes of Drug Administration: Enteral

6.7K
Medications can be administered through the enteral route using liquids, capsules, or tablets.
Enteral administration involves drug administration via the mouth in two ways: orally or sublingually.
Unlike sublingually drugs, drugs that are taken orally pass through the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and get metabolized by the liver. Once metabolized, the drug is absorbed into the systemic circulation, reaching different body parts via the bloodstream. However, while passing through the stomach,...

Vector Operations01:20

Vector Operations

2.3K
Vectors are physical quantities that have both magnitude and direction. The vector operations include addition, subtraction, and scalar multiplication.
A vector multiplied by a scalar value is called scalar multiplication. The result obtained is a new vector with a different magnitude. If the scalar is positive, the direction of the vector remains the same, but if it is negative, the direction of the vector is reversed. For example, the product of the mass and velocity yields the momentum.

Operant Conditioning01:21

Operant Conditioning

2.9K
Operant conditioning, a key concept in behavioral psychology, involves using reinforcement and punishment to alter the likelihood of a behavior being repeated. B.F. introduced this type of conditioning. Skinner focused on voluntary behaviors and the consequences that follow them, influencing whether these behaviors will be strengthened or diminished.
Reinforcement in operant conditioning can be positive or negative, both of which serve to increase the likelihood of a behavior. Positive...

Summary

Preventable surgical cancellations after patients enter the operating room can be reduced. Improving preoperative evaluations and patient health assessments are key to minimizing these costly delays.

Area of Science:

  • Anesthesiology
  • Surgical Patient Management

Background:

  • Surgery cancellations lead to operating room inefficiency and wasted time.
  • Understanding the frequency and reasons for intraoperative cancellations is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the frequency and causes of surgery cancellations after patients entered the operating room.
  • To assess the preventability of these intraoperative cancellations.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective chart review of surgical procedures under general anesthesia (2008-2016).
  • Analysis of reasons for cancellation after patient entry into the operating room.

Main Results:

  • 30 surgeries were cancelled after patient entry and anesthesia preparation.
  • 55.6% of cancellations before anesthesia induction were preventable (36.7% of total).
  • Post-anesthesia cancellations were primarily due to patient health status.

Conclusions:

  • Enhanced preoperative evaluation systems can decrease intraoperative cancellations.
  • Systemic improvements in patient medical assessment are needed to reduce cancellations post-anesthesia entry.
