    Summary

    Anabolic steroid use in a young bodybuilder showed increased heart muscle thickness and voltage criteria, yet maintained normal ejection fraction. Further research is needed to determine the long-term cardiac health implications of these findings.

    Background:

    • The impact of anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) on cardiac structure and function remains incompletely understood.
    • Athletic training itself induces cardiac adaptations, complicating the assessment of drug-specific effects.

    Observation:

    • Clinical examination, electrocardiography (ECG), and echocardiography were performed on a 23-year-old male bodybuilder using AAS.
    • Measurements included ECG voltage criteria, left ventricular mass, and interventricular septal and posterior wall thickness.

    Findings:

    • The subject exhibited elevated ECG voltage criteria, left ventricular mass, and myocardial wall thickness compared to normal individuals and power athletes.
    • Despite these structural changes, the ejection fraction remained within normal limits.
